A Helpful Guide to Basic Dress Codes

When you’re invited to wedding & events and they tell you the dress code, it’s a courtesy to follow them as much as possible. There are five basic dress codes and these are smart casual, business casual, business formal, cocktail, and black tie.

  • Smart Casual
These are comfortable clothes like jeans and tees which you can elevate using accessories. You can wear unstructured blazers on top of white shirts to look sophisticated even on simple clothes.
  • Business Casual
Blazers are tailored instead of unstructured ones. No jeans and t-shirts, but you can wear tees as long as they’re plain and paired with blazers and accessories. Skip open-toe shoes as well.
  • Business Formal
It could be a dress, pants, or pencil skirt that is not shorter than above the knee. Heels and designer flats are the best options.
  • Cocktail
For women, wearing mini, midi, and bodycon dresses would be great. For men, there’s not much of a rule, but trench coats and shawls are the best options. Dainty jewelry will complete the look.
  • Black Tie
Women’s clothing should be floor-length outfits. Heels will refine the look, so make sure you wear one. Dainty pieces of jewelry are still the best options, but you can wear statement jewelry if you’re wearing neutral clothes.
